WASHINGTON, 30 Oct. 2010. Engineers at VT Miltope in Hope Hull, Ala., introduced a ruggedized personal data assistant -- the RPDA. It comes in thee forms -- RPDA-1 base unit; RPDA-1P, which is the RPDA-1 base unit plus PC card expansion module (PCEM); and the RPDA-1S, which consist of the RPDA-1 base unit plus SAASM/TACLINK 3000+expansion module (STEM).
The RPDAs are part of VT Miltope's newest rugged computer family, called HARD WEAR. The family also includes clamshell laptops, convertible laptops, handhelds, and mounted computers in addition to the RPDAs.
VT Miltope's latest handheld devices are ultra rugged, meeting all appropriate electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and other ultra rugged requirements, says Julie Briggs, vice president of rugged systems development at VT Miltope.
The RPDA-1 base unit is powered by the Texas Instruments OMAP 3530 processor and ARM Cortex A8 32-bit processor running as fast as 600 MHz, Briggs says. Its 4.1-inch sunlight readable touchscreen allows for operation in the extreme environments. The RPDA-1 is capable of accepting a removable battery to extend the performance in demanding missions. For added functionality, the RPDA-1P pairs the RPDA-1 base unit with a PC card expansion module for up to two (2) type-II PC Cards or one (1) type-III PC Card.
The RPDA-1S device contains an internal L1/L2 GPS antenna and a port for interconnecting with an external GPS antenna when such is available. Selection of the external GPS antenna versus the internal GPS antenna can be automatic or manual.
